I have found that it does not.
Is this true or have I not done something correctly?
Here is the Markdown:
I tried both the MD and the html. Same

You can use a plugin (eg wp-markdown) to enable markdown support for Wordpress.

If you're writing in WordPress, you have formatting tools like in a word processor. You can create headings, make words bold, italic, or turn them into links. So no real need for Markdown.

Thank you, there used to be a desktop application that you could create posts to WordPress, it had all the graphic, text advantages and it sent the document to the WP site. I have tried to find it but cannot, it was a very convenient way to create blog posts when you were not able to go to the site.
The plugin TinyMCE Advanced is very good and when in the site it gives you most of the ability one needs to post.

There are already enough options in WordPress's built in visual editor to format the text just about any way you need to.

Yes Rod, but you HAVE TO BE IN THE SITE TO DO IT. I had remembered a Microsoft product that would allow posts to a site WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE SITE. I think that is a very good idea, in fact I had used it a great deal in the past. So my question is,,,,do you remember what that product was??

There are a lot of products that will allow you to compose in a desktop app, then upload the post to Wordpress. Desk is one (http://desk.pm/); Byword also allows publishing to Wordpress (https://bywordapp.com/); I like Byword. I don't use it for Wordpress, but I do compose in it frequently. I'm sure there are others, but you'd have to search them out. Those are the only two I can pull by name from the top of my head.

Greatly appreciated Mathew. This is what I was hoping for. I will check them out. With traveling like I do, there are times when internet is non-existent or so miserably slow, that it makes it impossible to create posts. These look like the ones that would do that.
Since going with your products some years ago, I have become a believer in Markdown. It appears that bywordapp does allow MD.

Ah, you're on Windows. Sorry! Maybe try http://writemonkey.com/ or http://pad.haroopress.com/, or some of the apps listed at https://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/.
