How do you limit a search to an album or a subset of albums? A search at any level seems to return results across all albums (customers) even if they are in different album sets.

Search works across all albums that are not hidden from search.
You can require or omit terms from search: http://backlight.theturninggate.net/doc … t_s_search
So one thing you can do is include instructions in the gallery copy or in a pop-up that will help your clients search.
Create a unique keyword for each client and add it to all images. Then include instructions in the album directing your client to require that keyword in the search (+unique-keyword). That way, only images that include that client keyword will appear in the result.
