#101 Re: CE4 Publisher » Publisher error when updating an Album Set's settings » 2015-02-03 05:06:14

Ben, I can repeatedly cause the publisher error shown at the bottom of this post by taking the following steps:
a) Create new root publisher album set (say "AlbumSetA");
b) Create new album set (say "AlbumSetB") within AlbumSetA;
c) Edit AlbumSetB's Title and Slug and commit ... below error occurs.

Both album sets are empty of images and therefore haven't been explicitly published. And I believe that the server structure and Lr naming is now out of sync (forgot to double check this though).

Thanks, Rod -- that's pretty obscure (but I now vaguely remember reading it somewhere). Anyway, "show captions" is enabled for Magnific. Still waiting on fix for captions not showing in publisher created Magnific albums...

BTW, any (easy) way to show counters in Highslide?

#103 Re: PHPlugins (CE4) » Missing phplugins-sample directory » 2015-01-31 05:41:49

Yup, totally understand, Rod.  Just didn't know where to find it in order to move it!

#104 Re: CE4 Publisher » Publisher error when updating an Album Set's settings » 2015-01-31 05:34:52

Ben, I did experience some Publisher errors earlier when I was changing album and album set parameters (e.g., slugs). I had a very bad experience a while ago with CE3 where Lr, galleries.xml (i.e., CE3's db), and the server's data structures got out of agreement. So I am very sensitive to problems in this area. Therefore whenever I experienced a CE4 Publisher error, I used FTP to inspect the server's file structure to make sure it agreed with what Lr was reporting for slugs. I always found everything in agreement so I assumed the errors had no side-effects and continued. Apparently something did get out of wack at some point. To my knowledge, I did not manually performed any FTP changes that could have caused the problem (only used FTP to delete the album set tree after it was deleted within Lr).

BTW, some of the Publisher errors definitely occurred as a result of a bug in Publisher-220 reported in this forum. After a few Publisher errors were experienced I search this forum and found that a hot fix existed ... I immediately updated to 220b. But I am still periodically experiencing Publisher errors from the server...

My earlier bad CE3 Publisher error experiences occurred when my website was hosted on an old-technology GoDaddy Linux server. In preparation for moving to CE4 I recently moved my website onto a cPanel server. I debated whether to go with TTG-recommended BlueHost but stayed with GoDaddy when my research showed that the performance, quality, & support differences between these two ISPs' cPanel hosting products appeared to be close to zero. Anyway, I was EXTREMELY disappointed when I received my first CE4 Publisher error since I was hoping to leave them behind. As before, many (all since 220b) seem to me to be concurrency errors -- where one Publisher transaction hasn't completed before the next is submitted. Unfortunately there is no way for a user to know when a transaction is complete so IMO there is an inherent race condition (I suspect that this is an architectural problem with Lr's publishing toolkit). Anyway, in my experience even waiting 30 seconds after an apparently successful album set/album change may be insufficient. I have come to this conclusion as a result of experiencing these errors mostly (probably only) when doing lots of album/album set creations/modifications when setting up a new album set tree before publishing a tree of albums/images from a recent trip (or presently while setting up a sandbox CE4 tree for experimentation).

I am curious, what database technology is CE4 using in place of CE3's galleries.xml scheme?

#105 Re: CE4 Gallery » CE4 Gallery Ques./Issues (masthead padding, Magnific metadata display) » 2015-01-31 04:46:48

Thanks, Rod. I'll wait for a fix for Publisher created captions for Magnific.

BTW, I am using Gallery 6.1.4a and I don't see any specific Magnific set up area anywhere in the template's UI within Lr. In the template's "Appearance" block's "Large  Image Presentation" area I have "Highslide Slideshow" selected for "Presentation: Desktop: and "Magnific Popup"selected for "Presentation: mobile". Under that I only have a "Highslide Slideshow" parametric area. I have no similar parametric "Magnific set up" area (which I thought was very strange when I first went through the template initially -- I ended up assuming that Highslide relevant values were used by Magnific and that it didn't have any unique parameters).

I do have "Caption" checked in the "Image Info" template block with "Caption" as the selected value.

#106 Re: PHPlugins (CE4) » Missing phplugins-sample directory » 2015-01-31 04:21:46

Thanks, Rod -- I had read that documentation a few times and still didn't pick up on the fact that the phplugins-sample directory would be WITHIN THE TEMPLATE exported to ttg-be's template tree (just read it again and still don't see it). For some reason I thought that I would find it elsewhere on the server. Oh well, I'm explaining all this here so that it might help someone else in the future.

I decided to enable phplugins for an already-functioning test CE4 website. So I make a new version of an existing Gallery template, enabled its phplugins checkbox together with entering the server path to my galleries directory. I then exported that new template to the server, created a new album (assigning it the new Gallery template), and published that album. Went to the server to enable custom CSS but there is no /phplugins-sample/ directory in galleries. What did I miss? When should have this directory been created? I thought that I might manually copiy that directory from an installation ZIP but couldn't find it there. TIA!

In digging deeper, something is ready screwed up with this albumSet/Album tree. Don't know how it got this way, but going to delete it within Lr and on Server, and ignore how it might have happened. If it happens again I will add to this thread.

#110 Re: CE4 Gallery » CE4 Gallery Ques./Issues (masthead padding, Magnific metadata display) » 2015-01-30 02:48:17

Thanks, Rod -- just read up on Dynamic Mastheads and it sounds like that is what I want.

Regarding large image captions not showing on mobiles ... very strange that you are seeing captions. FOR ME the http://www.samcos.com/_sites/rick/galle … est-Album/ gallery in my original email only shows large image captions on the desktop, not on the mobile version (i.e., captions don't show in Magnific version). That is, unless I don't know where to look -- I assume that the caption should be shown in the black bar under each large image in the slideshow. Right now only "#/total#" is showing in that bar's bottom right corner, with close & link icons shown in top bar (unless I tap on the image in which case both top and bottom bars are hidden). BTW, for me the bottom counter doesn't show in desktop presentation, only the image's caption, left justified. This is what I thought that I set up in the template and expect to see on mobiles.

BTW, I haven't enabled (yet) php plugins so no chance that I'm overriding something.

I'm finally getting around to investigating the migration of my CE3 website to CE4. I've started with experimenting with Gallery and I'm running into the following:

•    I noticed that when using the sample Whiteout Gallery shiipped with CE4 that there is additional padding shown above and below the masthead on narrower displays (e.g., look at http://www.samcos.com/_sites/rick/galle … -Whiteout/ on a tablet or phone and rotate the device between vertical and horizontal viewing). And it gets MUCH worse when a graphical identity plate is used. You can see it here: http://www.samcos.com/_sites/rick/galle … est-Album/ . This 2nd album’s template is the Whiteout sample template with the only changes being: fonts, a graphical identity plate, and masthead/navigation vert+horiz padding reductions). I’ve tried it in three browsers: Chrome, Firefox, & Safari. This extra padding is not shown/previewed within Lightroom when the preview window is narrowed.

•    I have album image metadata (caption) successfully showing in Highslide presentation on desktops. However the metadata which then shows in Magnific is only #/<total #>. How does one get an image’s caption (or other metadata) to display in Magnific  (i.e., on small displays)?

TIA for any help!
