#26 Backlight Support » I lost my two-column layout with my right tray?? » 2018-06-05 05:39:38

I had a blog site that was working well for the past couple years (www.mindstormphoto.com).  Somehow it got the menu colors messed up, and they no longer were readable in the hover condition.  I asked for help on that, and got it (thank you!), and the menus are now working again.

However.... (yes, there always seems to be one...) in the process I have now reverted to a one-column layout.  In WordPress, I try to add the widgets again, but am told I cannot.  No idea how it messed up this time... sad

How do I get this back to a two-column layout, and hopefully recover my right tray?  (I can recreate the right tray if needed, I suppose, one I have a place to put it)

In trying to adjust some settings, it looks like I messed up the menu display on my main page.  I have not been able to figure out where this is controlled in the last couple hours of trying various things.

I have made menu display changes that apply to all my linked pages (the ones that a user can navigate to through the menu).  However, I cannot find where the main page menu color are controlled.

Right now, the main menu is blue text on a white background.  Not bad, and I can live with it (this has been the color since I first started using BackLight).  However, when I hover over the menu, it becomes a blue background with (a slightly different shade of) blue text.  Nearly impossible to read, and rather ugly to boot...

My website is at -- www.mindstormphoto.com

Can anyone point me where to fix that main page menu color?

As is, anywhere I am in our web site, the tab text says "MindStorm Photo." That is a perfect default text.

However, for many pages, I would prefer a different text -- one that describes the specific page the person is on.

I don't see anywhere in BackLight to do that. Does it exist and I just overlooked it?

For reference, here is one such page --

#29 Backlight Support » How to eliminate the menu on the left column of an album page? » 2018-06-03 08:46:08

I have created a "private album page" for those that were with us to a falcon rescue center yesterday. I have no objection to anyone seeing it, but it is "private" because it has far more photos of individuals that I would ever include in a generally viewable gallery page.

However, it has our total menu along the left edge (column 1) and I don't see how to get rid of that. In the Lightroom album page, I turned off 'map' and anything else that looked related.

In the Backlight template I expected to be able to turn it off, but I find no reference to it in the template, so no idea how to accomplish that?

For reference, here is the page I am trying to modify --

#30 Re: Backlight Support » No menu on iPad/iPhone? » 2018-04-29 16:33:04

@Rod - You are batting 1000 -- right again!

I was having trouble with things not looking right, and with changes not showing up on my system (W3 cache issue), and was setting some things wild to see what would happen.  Sure enough, I had set the icon here to transparent.

All is better now. Thx!  (I still have an odd menu color problem, but I will look further into that after some sleep -- it is 2:30AM here...)

#31 Re: Backlight Support » No menu on iPad/iPhone? » 2018-04-29 13:48:53

@rod - Thx.  I checked that, and it was set to Pallet 1 already.  However, the color was set to transparent...?  I changed the color to black, but...

On my computer, I shrank the width of the browser until it was narrow enough to be similar to an iPad.  The top menu disappeared, and the expected popup did NOT appear.  I moved my mouse over that area, and discovered that the cursor changed from an arrow to a hand.  Sure enough, if I clicked there, the menu showed up.

I then went to my iPhone and tried it, Also, the menu pops up if I click in the upper right corner, but there is no icon visible.

I have already turned off the W3 cache. I tried clearing the template cache, but my change to to the color has not shown up.  I will wait a few hours and see if the change magically comes through, as it did with my earlier problems (when I had the W3 cache turned on).

My website (www.mindstormphoto.com) has a blog on the home page. There is then a menu across the top to reach various photo galleries, and a right-side panel to directly reach older posts.  All that works fine on a computer screen, like my 27" iMac Pro.

However, when showing a friend tonight, I realized that neither an smartphone nor large iPad can reach those.  No menu across the top. No panel on the side. No "row of horizontal bars" to click to open it.  I ran this on WordPress tonight, simulating the smaller screens, and confirmed those items do not exist.

However, if I go to a gallery page (http://www.mindstormphoto.com/galleries/ecuador/ for Ecuador images), I DO see the row of horizontal bars, which I can click to reach a menu and thus jump to any other gallery.

What am I missing to get the menu show across the top of the blog page on small screens?

#33 Re: Backlight Support » Backlight template changes not reflected in actual web page? » 2018-04-27 16:19:05

@Rod -- Just wanted to confirm.  Rather busy today, so I just got around to testing another change to my gallery a few minutes ago.  The change immediately showed up on the published version.

You hit it on the head -- it was the third party cache (that I had completely forgotten about) that was causing the initial error.

Please mark this issue as closed.  (is there a way I can do that myself?)

#34 Re: Backlight Support » Backlight template changes not reflected in actual web page? » 2018-04-27 14:01:07

@Mathew - I do the "clear template cache" when installing updates, as your instructions mention.  I never thought of doing it when things aren't propagating as expected though.

So, if I clear the template cache, it will rebuild immediately with the new design?  Makes sense now that I say it that way, but gotta admit, I never thought of it in those terms before.

#35 Re: Backlight Support » Backlight template changes not reflected in actual web page? » 2018-04-26 22:19:27

@Rod - I think you nailed it again!  Yes, I had "W3 Total Cache" WordPress plugin installed.  I just disabled it now (after you pointed it out)

My changes from last night Backlight tweaking finally showed up this morning.  I couldn't figure out why it was taking several hours for anything to show up. I'll bet it was that cache plugin.  I'll do some more testing later today (gotta run to Spanish class now) and see for sure.

So, on a related note... do you recommend use of something like the W3 cache plugin for normal use, once the Backlight design has settled down?

#36 Re: Backlight Support » Backlight template changes not reflected in actual web page? » 2018-04-26 15:58:43

When I do a "reload" on a browser, doesn't that clear the cache for that specific page and reload it? (that is how I refresh this page to see any responses, and I use that on many other pages that change from time to time and I follow)

It does now show the side panels, though it took close to half an hour to show up.  That makes tweaking designs pretty hard.  Since then I have changed some other settings (spacings on the side panel, to tighten things up), but they still don't show up an any of the three browsers I have tried (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) an hour later...?

When I created the Backlight template, I set it to automatically save and publish all changes, as recommended in the documentation.  Except it isn't...?

Sometimes I see the changes in my site, and sometimes not. I haven't figured out what does cause it to forward.

I played with the Header, and yes saw it show up after several tries.  I don't like it (the current variation is hideous and was done when trying to figure out how to make the template change propagate at all) and want to turn it off.  Instead, I seem to have lost my side panel, and have that ugly header up there, complete with an extra search button that I do not believe I asked for.

Exporting is not right, since that just creates a text file for backup purposes.  How do I force the changes to propagate through to my web site?

Here is a screenshot of what my site looks like in the WordPress designer, using Backlight -- https://www.dropbox.com/s/24fq13qwv3tev … 6.png?dl=0

Note that it shows the side panel and does NOT show the header (both of which are correct).

However, here is what my website (www.mindstormphoto.com) looks like tonight -- https://www.dropbox.com/s/acjomi3eiqjog … 6.png?dl=0

Note that it no longer shows a side panel, and DOES show that ugly (because I mucked it up) header...?

#38 Re: Backlight Support » Can I have "static page" AND "recent posts" both on home page? » 2018-04-26 14:49:47

I guess this can be closed (not sure how to delete a post?)

I found a usable workaround.  I added a TEXT widget to the top of my side panel, which had the info I wanted.

For the last few years, my home page has shown my blog, with "recent posts."  I have a menu across the top that goes to various galleries.  I have found that almost nobody notices that menu though, and pretty much nobody sees when a new gallery has been added (they are kinda buried in the menu structure).

I do not want to move the menu to a side panel. Though it would be more visible, it would take up too much space.

What I want to do is to put a sticky perm post as the top item in the blog, followed by my recent posts.  In that static post, I would have a brief comment about the galleries, and what was the most recent gallery added.  I would edit that post from time to time, as new galleries are created.

In the "static page" setup in WordPress though, I can only find the ability to have 'static page' OR 'recent posts' and not both.

Is there a fairly easy workaround?

#40 Re: Backlight Support » Migrate from WordPress CE4 to Backlight fails? » 2018-04-26 13:37:49

@rod -- Thanks! That was the problem.  The YouTube said to just drop in the module and it would appear, and didn't say anything about that step.

I followed the link you showed. After some fiddling, and a few moments of panic (when my website lost all the blog images!?), I think I now have it up and running properly.

As is right now, I don't see any significant difference between the CE4 blog and the Backlight blog.  I will explore things a bit more in the next couple days.  There is one particular feature that I thought I would be getting in the update that is clearly not there, but I will create a separate post for that (static page issue).

I have been using Backlight for my gallery for a couple years, yet still using the CE4 WordPress theme.  Decided tonight to migrate that portion too.  Bought the WP-Backlight module and installed it.

The theme does not show up in my WP theme panel?  I still see the CE4, but not the BL version.

I note that the YouTube on installing says to put the "module-wordpress" folder into the 'modules' folder on my ftp.  However, the 123 version supplies a "pangolin-wordpress" folder instead.  I assumed that the folder had just been renamed, and put it in the "modules" folder, but to no avail.

I had hoped to include a screenshot of my ftp hierarchy, but I don't see a facility for that here.  Instead, I put that screenshot in my DropBox -- https://www.dropbox.com/s/rrgvwvv43h9cv … y.png?dl=0

I expect there is something simple I am missing. Any idea what it is?

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that change.  I remember being hit over the head to use meta keywords back in the late 90's when I put up my first site.

I have now edited the album descriptions and text to include the desired search terms.

I want to add meta keywords to my albums, so that a search for "Cuenca artist" will bring up the art section of our website.

I don't see any place to add keywords in the TTG publisher.  Is there a place that I overlooked?

Try this:
Make the album in question the Target Collection.
Right click on the image under "Deleted Photos to Remove" and  choose "Add to Target Collection".

Very clever...!

I had tried that earlier, but just hit the 'B' key, which is the shortcut I normally use.  That didn't work, but your right-click / add-to-collection does.

Thx!

Our workflow has been that I set up the initial collection of images, my wife then reviews them and will mark ones she thinks should be removed.  Occasionally I disagree and decide to leave one of her deletions in anyway.

With TTG Publisher, when she deletes and image, it goes into a "Deleted Photos to Remove" stack.  I don't see any way to unmark it for deletion (or "undelete" it)?

I just look at the page source code and click on the URL that refers to your custom css

OK.  Some poking around, and I see a "style editor" tab that tells me what my CSS was.  Thx for pointing that out!

Please consider this subject resolved.

#48 Re: Backlight Support » How to make BOLD and LARGER title on photo album? » 2016-07-05 05:52:57

hmmm tried that, but with no change?  Here is an example of how it still looks after the following code:

@media screen and (min-width: 1025px) {
    /* For devices larger than iPad: */
	.pswp__caption__center {
	   font-size: 1.5em;
	   text-align: center;
	}
}

Caption is still left-aligned and normal size...?

#49 Re: Backlight Support » How to make BOLD and LARGER title on photo album? » 2016-07-05 04:46:56

I have made some custom CSS that has ruined the site, but not yet accomplished what I want... smile  (I have undone that, and trying fresh now)

I created a file "msp-custom.css" and uploaded it to my site under "backlight->custom->css" right next to your two other css sample.

I am trying to make the title under "large image display" much larger and more bold.  As is now, nobody even notices there is a tiny title down there on my large monitor.  So I tried the following:

@media screen and (min-width: 1025px) {
    /* For devices larger than iPad: */
	pswp.body {
		font-size: 32px;
	}
}

nada. No effect.  When I tried it in the inspector, I got what I wanted. My problem now is interpreting those myriad of variables to control the proper one in the CSS (at least I think that is the problem...).

It will probably work with some tweaking. It was just the first thing that looked like it might work, without spending an hour looking into it. But it's a place to start.

Yep, I understand and appreciate it.  I was a software developer before retiring in 2013, so definitely know how that goes, though I never did more than dabble in CSS.  (I was mostly C++ for my last couple decades)

I agree that it is a good start.  I am somewhat overwhelmed by the massive changes I am making to my galleries right now (still have a week or more to go before I expect to be done), and decided this was a topic that can be sidelined for now.

I will likely return to this and debug the code later.  Again, I really appreciate your help on this!

Overall though, I am VERY impressed with this Backlight upgrade.  I was on vacation for 3 months in Istanbul when it was announced, and I groaned at the thought of such a change from CE4 (which I was not really using properly according to Hoyle).  I looked at 3 other alternatives when I got back home to Ecuador, and all of them bombed out fairly early. Backlight really is the best I have tested in the last couple weeks (since returning home).  Not 100% to my vision, but I doubt anyone else will ever have my exact vision, so "close enough to work with" is pretty darn good. smile

I have a few ideas that would make my specific task easier, but am still deciding if they are appropriate for suggesting for changes, or are just "my way of doing things."
