#2 Re: Backlight 2 Support » More Options for Panorama? » 2019-07-25 11:59:04

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the info. I will check out the custom css approach. On the workaround for the other (each pano in its own album), would I lose the "thumbnails"/preview?

No need to respond yet - I'll go to work on it & see what I can come up with.

#3 Re: Backlight 2 Support » More Options for Panorama? » 2019-07-25 08:52:38

Hi Matt,

First, thanks for bringing the panorama option back! I am still seeing that pink background behind any displayed caption text - can that go away soon, please? (I'm using TTG-Publisher version created 6/12/2019 in Lightroom, Backlight v.2.0.10, so I think I'm current)

Also a feature request: can you add an option for the gallery to display each pano on its own page (or better yet, let the user choose between this & the way it works now, with all panos on one page)? This might necessitate a gallery page, with previews of all the panos (much like a regular gallery index page)? It wouldn't have to work like it did in CE4 Stage, with the cropped versions, instead I'd be satisfied with tiny thumbnails for the index page...

What do you think?

Thanks,

John

OK, sounds good. I'll start in on it tonite.

Again, Thanks!

Hi Rod,

Yes, in the album's template Shuffle Images was checked. I unchecked it and cleared template cache again - success!

Now I can move on to trying to get my head around how to display panoramas  :-)

Thanks so much!

OK, after a republish, the cropped image looks as it should. First image & order of the rest is still apparently random, though.

In the list of choices for display order, what does "Custom" mean, and how is it different from "managed by Lightroom"?

Thanks,

John

#7 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Photo Display order for inline gallery » 2019-07-23 08:32:20

No difference after rebooting browser, clearing template cache again (Chrome also shows same result). Initial image still apparently random, so is display order. This despite settings in LR Publish gallery calling for a particular image to lead, order of rest to be "managed by Lightroom".

That little cropping change also does not show up, despite republishing. I do have the "Push metadata..." checked, will try unchecking & republishing to see if that brings the crop along...

Otherwise I don't know what to think...

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, first tried clearing template cache, have republished several times. Still no joy. What's even more weird is that I made a cropping change on one image and that crop does not show up either. ???

Next I will quit the browser (Safari) & try again.

Hi again,

I solved most of the issues with Vegas Slideshow presentations that I had earlier (thanks Rod!). Now have a couple questions just about tweaking the slideshows.

The shows are inline on pages used to separate my content into broad areas - art, commerce, etc. Sizing is OK, but I can't figure out how to control the order of display, or even which image loads first. There are controls both in TTG Publisher and the Lightroom Publisher module (my galleries are built with the latter), with settings for determining which image is displayed first. I changed this from "Random" to spec a particular image, but no effect, first image is still random (these are small galleries, only 6-8 images, BTW).

Have also looked at display order - controls suggest options to display by filename or creation date, "managed by Lightroom" or "Custom". But the order of display seems random, whichever of the last two options I select. What is meant by "Custom" here, anyway? I thought it might be analogous to custom order in the LR collection that is being published - no? And again, the "managed by Lightroom" option doesn't reflect how they are ordered in the LR Publish album.

What am I missing here?

Thanks,

John

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, it was as simple as including the slash in front of the url. I don't know how I managed to leave that out.

I trip over the simplest things sometimes!

John

I am trying to include an image on my Contact page (ultimately want this on the About page as well). Following Rod Barbee's excellent tutorial, made an "img" folder inside the Custom folder inside Backlight, uploaded images to it, then included the simplest version of his recommended text in the About page's Page Copy area. But image doesn't show - the "alternate"/error text shows instead.

OK, looking into it a bit more, I think it may be related to how I have set up 3 different sections for my site - "Art" "Commerce" & "Personal". They each display galleries, etc. just fine, and I have tweaked the navigation to make them seem like 3 different sites. But when I use Rod's technique to display an image inline, it seems like I'm getting tripped up by how I have separated the 3 areas.

My backlight folder is at the root of my domain, as in the tutorial. This is the text I pasted into the Page Copy block:

<img src="backlight/custom/img/SmallThings03LR.jpg" width="500" alt="Uh oh, image should display here!">

when I dig out the image address info from the empty image block on my site, I see not the source info I specified, but this:

<http://jwlimages.com/Contact_Art/backli … gs03LR.jpg>

- the addition of the "/Contact_Art/" apparently causes the fail.

How do I get Backlight to not add this error to the file path?

Oh yeah, here's an example of the problem page:    <http://jwlimages.com/Contact_Art/>

Thanks!

OK, thanks! Understand there are lots of things to take care of. Whenever you do get to this one, it would be great to improve on the technique used in CE4 Stage. I remember using Photoshop to build a little video that would auto-play to scroll through the pano. It would be fun to have a gallery of those...

:-)

#13 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Panorama image display » 2019-04-12 13:21:22

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not very encouraged, tho - an initial attempt stymied, then nothing for a couple months. It's disappointing. It really would be great to have some way to display panoramas on the web. Some of my landscape prints can be 6-8 feet long, with extraordinary detail - but I can't show that on the web at all.

It's always frustration trying to display panoramic images on the web - the severe aspect ratios (3:1, 4:1, etc.) result in tiny images.

In the the CE4 version there was a Stage module which had a technique for displaying panorama-format images. For a landscape-oriented panorama, it showed a reasonable portion of the image (kind of like a frame) & allowed the user to scroll that "frame" across the rest of the image.

I am not finding a similar or better function in Backlight2 or Theater. Have I missed something?

Thanks,

John

Thanks jherman,

Yes, I have seen lots & lots of discussion about updating things to work with a site with SSL. Trying to catalog them for reference, as I'm sure I will need lots of help doing this.

I don't know about forced. But hasn't Google said it will penalize non-secure sites? (or words to that effect)...

Hi Rod,

Sounds like you're suggesting I might as well go ahead & build as secure site from the start.

Thanks for your reply - speedy & helpful, as always!

I am almost finished updating my test site from CE4 to Backlight2. Before I start putting things in place for my production site, I have a pretty basic question:

Am I going to need to go to https URLs soon? Google is starting to flag 'non-secure' sites now, but they still work. If I build my site without SSL will I be more-or-less forced to implement it in the near future?

(apologies if this is bone-head question, but as you can see I am not very savvy on this stuff)

I can continue my site with just http URLs - it's primarily a portfolio not a sales site. But if it seems like ultimately I'll need a security certificate & https URLs, I would rather go that route now than have to update it in a year or so. Also, I am assuming that implementing SSL before I build the production site will make things go much easier than adding it later - correct?

Thanks for any wisdom you can share on this - and don't hesitate to correct any possible misconceptions here!

#20 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Vegas Slideshow questions » 2019-02-06 03:42:35

Yes, it seems I need to always clear after changing any Presentation settings. Not so bad, now that I know, but at first it really threw me for a loop when I made changes that seemed to have no effect...

#21 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Vegas Slideshow questions » 2019-02-06 03:33:08

Hi again,

Yes, changing aspect ratio is helping a lot. Also allows total page size to come back to more reasonable area.

Interesting how I have to clear template cache each time I change a setting in order to see the results.

#22 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Vegas Slideshow questions » 2019-02-06 03:24:52

Thanks Rod,

I'm experimenting now. Will report back about resizing the slideshow.

Meanwhile started a new thread because looking at this made me realize the whole page & all elements seem larger than I want.

Trying to transition from CE4 to Backlight. Have had a long detour into slideshow gallery issues, but have realized that my Backlight test site looks & feels way too big & clunky. My page templates use pretty much default specs, e.g., layout size 1140px max-width, 1024 breakpoint. But the page & all elements on it - logo, text, etc. - seem out of scale, especially when compared to my older CE4 site.

Here are screengrabs of each, as seen on my iPad (1536x2048px):
http://ftp.jwlimages.com/home4/jwlimage … n_iPad.PNG
and
http://ftp.jwlimages.com/home4/jwlimage … n_iPad.PNG

For desktop versions, Backlight...

and CE4...

Can I build a Backlight site that doesn't seem to scale everything up so dramatically?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I'm going to start a new topic on page sizes, since I'm veering away from Slideshow issues.

#25 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Vegas Slideshow questions » 2019-02-06 02:42:57

Hi Rod and Terry,

Thanks to you both. Yes, I finally deduced that while Theater can have a no color background, what shows thru is the "Base" background color called for in the page template - it just ignores the gradient set up with my custom .css. Oh well...

Rod, I have been trying differing aspect ratios, but will play with that some more. Seems like there must be some way to not have the page (and all elements on it) be so gigantic. I will try to post screen captures from my iPad of the old CE4 home page vs. the new Backlight one - back with that post in a few minutes...
